ingredient tips & substitutions

  • Sprouted Black Beans: can be cooked ahead of time and stored in the fridge. Not a fan of black beans? Why not try with sprouted chickpeas!
  • Bread Crumbs: Any kind will do, can be gluten-free if needed.
  • Jalapeño: Optional, but adds a lot of flavour. Don’t be afraid of spice, if you remove the seeds it will be mild.
  • Cheese: Can use a vegan substitute if needed.
  • Eggs: We haven’t tried this with an egg substitute, let us know if you give it a try!

Jalapeño Cheddar Sprouted Black Bean Burgers

Full of fibre, protein and flavour!
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Servings: 6

What You'll Need:

  • 1 cup dried Sprouted Black Beans (2 cups cooked)
  • ¼ cup finely chopped onion (about ½ small onion)
  • 1 jalapeño
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ½-¾ cup bread crumbs
  • ½ cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 2 eggs

How To Make It:

  • Cook black beans according to package directions. Rinse and set aside to strain completely (to get rid of excess moisture).
  • Finely chop the onion, garlic and jalapeño. For mild burgers, remove all the jalapeno seeds; the more seeds you add, the spicier they will be.
  • In a frying pan with about a tsp of oil, soften the onion, garlic and jalapeño on low-medium heat. Once soft, pat dry with paper towel to remove moisture.
  • In a large bowl, roughly mash the sprouted black beans with a fork or potato masher.
  • Add the jalapeño mixture, along with the other ingredients and stir until fully incorporated. Start with a ½ cup of bread crumbs and add more if needed, the mixture will be a little sticky but should hold together easily.
  • Take about ½ cup of the mixture and form it into a tightly packed patty with your hands (about ½ inch thick).
  • Add a splash of oil to a frying pan and cook covered on low-medium heat, until golden and crispy, about 4-5 minutes each side.
  • Serve immediately on Sprouted Wheat Burger Buns with your favourite toppings.
