Cooking Guide – Sprouted Hulless Oats

Cooked Sprouted Hulless Oats

Sprouted hulless oats are a protein packed sweet cereal grain that can be enjoyed any time of the day! For breakfast, hulless oats make a hot bowl of oatmeal, especially when topped with your favourite granola and fruit. For lunch, it can make a wonderful cold whole grain salad with chopped fresh vegetable and a light vinaigrette. For dinner, use hulless oats in a savoury whole grain dish with roasted root vegetables.

Hulless oats are hearty and contain protein, fibre and complex carbohydrates. The sprouting process activate enzymes within the seed to help break up dense carbohydrate into simple sugars and protein chains into simpler amino acids.  Both of these conversions aid our ability to digest the whole grain. Better digestion is one reason why we sprout hulless oats, but it also helps to increase their natural sweetness and reduces the cook time!

There are many methods you can use to cook sprouted hulless oats unfortunately we cannot list them all on the package.  See below for a few comprehensive cooking methods. We hope you enjoy your sprouted goodness!

Stovetop Instructions

  1. Measure desired amount of sprouted hulless oats
  2. Place in strainer and rinse
    • Rinsing helps to remove tiny fibers surrounding the hulless oat kernels. These are naturally occurring fibers present on the hulless oat plant
  3. Place rinsed hulless oats in pot and add water (1 part hulless oats to 3 parts water)
  4. Bring to roiling boil
  5. Turn burner to low heat, cover slightly and let simmer for 25-30 minutes, or until desired texture is reached. The oats will be cooked when they are soft and there is no white starch left uncooked in the middle of the oat kernel. Please note, hulless oats will remain intact when cooking so it is best to taste in order to determine if they are ready or not.
  6. Strain any excess water and rinse.
