Chocolate Sprouted Hummus

Chickpeas may not be your go-to for a sweet treat, but this chocolate sprouted hummus is rich and surprisingly indulgent! Sprouted chickpeas have a smooth texture and a naturally sweet, nutty flavour that pairs well with nut butter and cocoa. It packs a protein and fibre punch while still satisfying that chocolate craving and comes together with just 10 minutes of active time. Serve it as a dip with fresh fruit, pretzels, or graham crackers, spread it on toast, or enjoy it straight from the spoon — no judgment here.

ingredient tips & substitutes

  • Nut Butter: must be the smooth natural (drippy) variety, but any nut butter will work. Our favourite is hazelnut for a nutella vibe!
  • Honey: can also use maple syrup, or your favourite liquid sweetener

recipe notes

  • While removing the chickpea skins can be an annoying extra step, it is the secret to smooth hummus, so we recommend taking the extra few minutes
  • Don’t blend the chickpeas immediately after straining as blending too hot can cause a hummus explosion!
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge and use within 5 days

Chocolate Sprouted Hummus

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Servings: 3

What You'll Need:

  • 1 cup Sprouted Chickpeas (¾ cup dry)
  • ¼ cup smooth natural nut butter (peanut, hazelnut, almond)
  • ¼ cup honey or maple syrup
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp vanilla
  • pinch sea salt
  • 2 tbsp water

How To Make It:

  • Cook sprouted chickpeas until very tender, almost falling apart. Skim off skins and discard, most should come loose and float but the more skins you remove, the smoother your hummus will be.
  • Once cooked, strain chickpeas and allow to cool slightly.
  • Put everything into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Add more water if needed, a little at a time, until desired texture is reached.
  • Serve with fruit (apples, strawberries), pretzels, graham crackers, or spread on toast.
